The Isabella County Fire Chiefs Association Fund was created by Alan and Kathy Johns in December 2009 to support first responders in Isabella County. The purpose of the fund is to facilitate the development of cooperative efforts in first responder education, fire prevention, public safety education, emergency care, hazardous material safety, and other areas related to the many fire departments that serve Isabella County.
Alan and Kathy Johns’ roots go very deep in the Mt. Pleasant Community. Both are lifelong residents and have volunteered for various Isabella County organizations over the years. In 1999, Alan became a volunteer firefighter with the Deerfield Township Fire Department. Currently Alan now serves as a medical first responder with Fremont Rescue.
During his time as volunteer firefighter, Alan made many good friends and wanted a method to give back to all fire departments that serve the residents of Isabella County. The result was the Isabella County Fire Chiefs Association Fund. The Isabella County Fire Chiefs Association is a board comprised of fire chiefs from every fire department that serve county residents; the board collectively makes decisions.
Alan and Kathy admire the dedication of this group of volunteer firefighters and medical first responders. They always have pagers on and will drop everything with no thanks expected. Alan describes his experience as a volunteer as “self-gratifying.”
The Isabella County Fire Chiefs Association Fund will help better train and equip volunteers. It takes a lot for someone to dial 911: “No one ever wants to make the call, but when you do call, they’re always there. This fund will help better prepare the people that show up at the door,” said Johns.
