Vicki L. Travis Nursing Scholarship Fund

Vicki Travis of Shepherd graduated from high school on a Friday and began her career as a nurse the following Monday. That was more than 50 years ago and she’s still impacting people’s lives through health care.

Her love for her career led her to establish the Vicki L. Travis Nursing Scholarship Fund in April 2022. It will provide educational funding to an aspiring nurse each year.

“Nursing has a special place in my heart, otherwise I wouldn’t have been in it this long,” Travis said. “As a nurse, you’re providing health care, but you’re also a counselor and an encourager. There is so much more to it and it takes someone special to do that.”

The demand for nurses is great, and Travis encourages those who have a passion for it to give it a try.

“If people say they may want to go into nursing, I encourage them to do so and share with them things I’ve learned over the years,” Travis said. “It takes a special person to be a nurse, and, through this fund, I can give back to someone who is interested in going into the field.”
