Give Local Isabella supports twenty-one local charitable organizations
More than 450 donations supported local charitable organizations during the second annual Give Local Isabella. Held on May 3, 2022, the social media-driven, crowdfunding opportunity engaged 21 local charitable organizations in a 24-hour fundraising competition. The communitywide event, hosted by the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation, raised $82,399.
Organizations with endowment funds held by the Foundation were eligible to participate in this giving event, utilizing an online platform to engage current and new community members in causes ranging from education to crisis support. “Give Local Isabella is a great investment in the Mt. Pleasant community,” said Natalie VanDyke of R.I.S.E. Advocacy. As one of the participating organizations, R.I.S.E. will benefit from nearly $5,000 in funds raised and matched for its endowment during the daylong event.
“It was so much fun to check the website during the day to see the numbers go up,” said Kate Connors, Executive Director of Life Choices of Central Michigan. Donations ranged from $10-$3,000 online and delivered in person over the course of May 3. When the clock struck midnight, 317 donors had made gifts totaling $52,399.
Organizations competed for ten $500 prizes associated with the event. The Isabella Community Soup Kitchen won $500 for their endowment by participating in training webinars prior to the giving day. MMI won $500 for their endowment by sharing information on social media about the event. A full list of verified prize winning organizations can be viewed at https://www.givelocalisabella.org/prizes.
In addition, $25,000 in match was distributed to participating organizations according to the percentage of total dollars raised. Renaissance Public School Academy and Chippewa Watershed Conservancy raised the most during the event, receiving 19% and 13% of the match pool. A full leaderboard can be viewed at https://www.givelocalisabella.org/leaderboards.
The children of Jack and Connie Harkins recommended that the prize and match dollars for this year’s Give Local Isabella come from their donor advised fund at the Community Foundation, the Harkins Community Fund. Elizabeth Harkins Meade, Christia Hitesman, and John Harkins thought an event focused on many charitable organizations in the community was a great way to honor their parents’ legacy. “Our parents loved this community, and we know that they would have been thrilled to be part of such a worthwhile fundraising event,” said Elizabeth.
While local charitable organizations spend most of the year fundraising for day-to-day operational expenses, Give Local Isabella is an opportunity to spend one day—24 hours—focused on the sustainability of these important agencies. “The Community Foundation wants to grow the endowment funds that support our most impactful local charities,” said Amanda Schafer, CEO/COO. The organization plans to host Give Local Isabella on an annual basis to draw attention to the need for sustainable income to protect these organizations for the long-term. “That’s the power of endowment,” Schafer added.
“For those nonprofits, thank you for all of the hard work you do in this community,” shared Elizabeth in a heartfelt video message.
Save the Date: Join the fun and give where you live during next year’s Give Local Isabella scheduled for May 2, 2023.

Give Local Isabella returns May 3 with 24 hours of Communitywide Fundraising
Give Local Isabella returns May 3 for 24 hours of communitywide fundraising. The event, hosted by Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation (MPACF), gives local charitable organizations the opportunity to educate their donors about endowment, utilize peer influence to raise dollars online through crowdfunding, and compete for a pool of at least $30,000 in match and prizes.
This year’s day of giving features new events! Participating organizations and their boards are invited to stop by the Foundation’s office in the morning for coffee and donuts. Later in the day, the public is invited to join all involved for a happy hour celebration with fun cocktails.
“As we head toward spring and see promising signs of the future, Give Local Isabella will be a fun, energized day that celebrates community,” said Amanda Schafer, the Foundation’s CEO. “May 3 shows what’s possible when we come together to build each other up.”
Organizations with endowment funds held by the Foundation are eligible to participate in this giving event. In addition to the donations they will solicit for their particular causes at givelocalisabella.org, the organizations will compete for matching funds. To date, $30,000 has been committed by the Harkins Community Fund. Thanks to the generosity of the Harkins family, many community organizations will benefit, Schafer said.
At the conclusion of the inaugural Give Local Isabella in 2021, over $100,000 was raised through communitywide fundraising and match dollars. MPACF is looking forward to meeting and exceeding that amount for 2022!
“One day. One community. Save the date and plan to give because, every dollar goes further on May 3. Everyone can be a philanthropist during Give Local Isabella. It’s about pulling together and giving forward.”

2022 Scholarship and Grant Opportunities

Pleasant Area Community Foundation (MPACF) awarded more than $800,000 through scholarships and grants benefitting local students, charitable organizations, schools and units of government. “Thanks to the power of endowment, the Community Foundation was able to support more than 400 organizations and individuals last year” stated CEO Amanda Schafer. MPACF has granted more than $10 million total since it was founded in 1990.
MPACF is now accepting applications for 100+ scholarship opportunities. Most are available to local students who will complete their senior year of high school or GED this spring. There are also two music scholarships for younger students, and more than a dozen scholarships for students already enrolled in, or planning to return to, some form of higher education. Frequently asked questions, a video tutorial, and a link to the online application system can be found at www.mpacf.org. More information will be shared on the Foundation’s Facebook page over the coming weeks. The 2022 scholarship application deadline is Wednesday, March 2.
MPACF is also accepting applications for its first of two annual competitive grant cycles. Charitable organizations, schools, and units of government may apply. Though all program types are encouraged, the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees is most interested in ideas that address one of the greatest concerns expressed in Isabella County’s most recent Community Needs Assessment: 1) Lack of jobs that pay enough to live on; and 2) Crime, violence, or bullying. Potential grantees are encouraged to view a Grantseeker Information Session with Program Officer Jaimie Capen-Cascaddan. First cycle letters of intent are due Wednesday, May 11, and the grant application deadline is Wednesday, May 18.
For information about starting or contributing to an endowed fund, which makes these annual opportunities possible, contact CEO Amanda Schafer at (989) 773-7322.

Charitable Giving Under the CARES Act
In 2020-21, COVID-19 has affected millions of Americans and small businesses. This has resulted in significant federal aid and private donations towards the relief effort. If you personally donated to a charity during 2021, then you may qualify for a new deduction under the CARES Act. The CARES Act outlines the following changes to charitable giving:
• A new temporary deduction in 2021 up to $300 for single filers, $600 for married-filing-jointly taxpayers.
• Even if you have not itemized your charitable giving in the past, your cash donation will now count as an “above the line” deduction on your 2021 tax return.
• For taxpayers that still itemize their deductions, the adjusted gross income limit for charitable gifts of cash was increased from 60 percent to 100 percent.
• For a corporation, the adjusted gross income limit increased from 10 percent to 20 percent of the business’ 2021 taxable income.
• Taxpayers can make donations via cash, check or credit card by December 31, 2021. Recordkeeping rules still apply for charitable gift deductions, such as receipts or donation letters from the organization.
• The deductions above are limited to donations to 501(c)3 public charities.
Additionally, those 72 and older in 2021 may still give retirement assets to charity through an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). And, those between the ages of 59 ½ and 72 in 2021 may give to charity after they have received their annual distribution. This is an excellent strategy for itemizers. Contact your investment advisor and/or tax professional to see if this makes sense for you.
If you have already donated to a public charity in 2021, make sure you received supporting documentation for the donation. If you have yet to donate, or have questions, staff at MPACF would be happy to help.
